General
- Identify the alloy of the steel.
- The maximum thickness of stainless you should attempt is 1/2"
- Thicker metals will require preheating.
Torch Tip
- Use the #00 for 0.010 to 0.020
- Use the #0 for 0.025 to 0.030
- Use the #0.5 for 0.035 to 0.045
- Use the #1 for 0.050 to 1/8"
- Use the #2 for > 1/8"
Gas Settings
- Use 4 to 4 1/2 psi on both gases
- If a 50' hose is used, increase your pressure 1 to 2 psi (see
setting up the torch)
Flame Setting
- Use a carburizing flame (excess acetylene)
- See image above - "the inner most cone"
Flux
- We recommend Solar Flux for best weld appearance. (see our accessories
page)
- For 100% penetration a flux or inert gas must be used on the
back side.
Rod Selection
- Identify the alloy of the steel that you are welding, and use
corresponding rod.
- If identification is not possible and the steel is magnetic,
try the 308 / 309 rods.
- If non magnetic use the 308 / 316 rods
- or shear small strips of excess metal off and use as a welding
rod.

Technique
Move torch in slow small increments - and do not weave
or oscillate the torch. Do not remove flame from metal abruptly as
this may crystallize the weld. |
